The Couriers of Caring

When does a two-year-old behind the wheel with a fistful of expired credit cards sound like a good idea?

For Jeannie, it was the best solution she’d heard in Forever. Just like the rest of us, the last few months (and years) had felt like an unending game of Bad News Dodgeball. After a long illness, her mother had passed away.

Jeannie herself had dodged two-and-a-half years of COVID strains...but then came the flu. You Know, the one that was worse because we had been protecting ourselves from COVID for two years. It was actually Jeannie’s two-year-old grandson Max who caught the bug, because...well, if anyone is going to catch it, it’s a two-year-old. The shortage of children’s medication had Max’s parents scrambling. Four days and five pharmacies later, Jeannie actually tracked some down, thanks to a Facebook Moms group posting updates as to where the magic cure could be purchased.

Her grandson’s medicine was delivered, and all was on the way to being okay. Until Jeannie got the flu herself. There were adult remedies available to cover up the two weeks of symptoms, but somehow her spirit still felt like, ‘What Next?’

Enter the two-year-old behind the steering wheel. Grandson Max’s favourite possession was his red, toddler-sized Cozy Coupe, in which he liked to run daily errands (without leaving the front room. He gets the best mileage that way). His parents had even equipped Max with two expired cash cards, so he could mimic paying via Tap when he did his imaginary Timmy’s runs, complete with him emitting ‘BEEP’ sound when he reached his virtual drive-through window.

Max’s parents sent ailing Jeannie a short video showing the toddler, resolutely hopping in his Cozy Coupe.

Videographer Dad asks, ‘Where are you going?’

Max - ‘To the drugstore...”

What for? ‘medicine for grandma.’

 Why?

‘To make her feel better...’

Grandson Max’s Cozy Coupe may not be able to reach highway speeds, but he got the cure delivered. Knowing that just one other person cared made more of a difference to Jeannie than anything available over the counter.

A standard sociological theory is that caring is baked into us, because the only reason our families survived is thanks to somebody else caring. How else did a two-year-old know that, since someone had shown him kindness when he needed help, the best thing to do was to repeat that kindness when it was needed in return?

The necessity of empathy has been hard-wired into us by necessity over thousands of years, to where we instinctively know it is in our best interests. What kind of a difference would you like to make? There are an infinite number of ways to do that. And Link Charity Canada are the proven professionals who can help you do just that...to the Max.
